This academic design project for Narrative and Architecture is sited in the dramatic carved space of a working granite quarry in Vermont.
The theatre is created as a cavernous void, a conical space inside the steep surface with multiple layers of lighting, seating and mechanical support spaces. The space compacts and condenses the inwardly focused performances - derived from the avant-garde theories of Antonin Artaud. The external screen shields the raw space from the quarry, and the shield also masks the vertical circulation system for accessing interiority. The mechanisms are intended to be welded over time from abandoned equipment and materials remaining from the quarrying process.
